When does a baby need a spinal checkup?

You do so many things to ensure your baby’s health.  When you were pregnant, you ate right, avoided cigarettes and alcohol, drugs, OTC meds…you just took care of yourself so your baby could have a healthy and happy journey to the outside!  And once that little bundle of love and joy appeared on the scene, you did everything you could to ensure that baby was kept safe and healthy!  Right?  Of course you did!

But have you had your baby’s spine checked?  Do you know your baby’s spine is healthy?  Did you know an unhealthy spine can affect your child’s health for his or her lifetime?  This is where your doctor of chiropractic becomes a very important part of your baby’s healthy life!  He is specially trained to check your child’s spine for areas of distortion that can cause nerve damage – the vertebral subluxation complex.

Sometimes a newborn’s spine is harmed at birth.  According to Doctor Abraham Towbin, MD, the birth process is potentially a traumatic, crippling event.  Mechanical stress is imposed upon the spine by obstetrical manipulation – even the application of standard childbirth procedures may prove to be intolerable to the fetus.  Most signs of neonatal injury observed in the delivery room are neurological.

With the birth process becoming more and more of an intervening procedure, the chiropractic adjustment becomes even more important to the child’s future.  Research is confirming chiropractor’s observations that infants may suffer from spinal subluxations.  In one study, 1200 babies we’re examined five days after birth.  211 of them suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity, and sleeplessness.  95% of those babies were discovered to have subluxations.

Although the researchers in this study were MDs, they recognized the power of chiropractic care and these babies were given the care they needed.  In fact, these spinal adjustments frequently resulted in the immediate quieting, cessation of crying, muscular relaxation, and sleepiness.  The researchers went on to note that an unhealthy spine causes many clinical features from central motor impairment to  lower resistance to infections, especially ear, nose, and throat infections.

The bottom line is that your child is never too young to be checked by your chiropractor for spinal problems which, if left untreated, can and will be a problem for the rest of the child’s life.  Isn’t it time you made an appointment to have your precious child evaluated?
