Spinal Decompression Therapy
Headaches strike everyone at some time in their lives. For many, they are totally debilitating and may last for days; for others less so and are relatively short lived – but for everyone a headache is a physically draining and painful experience. There are three types of headaches described by the medical world – migraine, which is the worst type; tension, which is the most common; and cluster, which are similar to migraines but of short duration. There are many and varied forms of treatment for the condition, such as medication, acupuncture, chiropractic treatments and, specifically, spinal decompression therapy.
There are many and varied causes of headaches, the most common being high blood pressure and low blood sugar levels, stress and tension, misalignment of the temporomandibular joint or bad reactions to medication or drugs. Everyday causes may be fatigue, bad posture, poor eyesight or incorrect lenses in glasses, too many hours spent in front of a computer and working in bad light.
Symptoms are a constant dull and tight feeling around, inside or on the sides of the head, throbbing or specific pin-point pain behind the eyes or ears and may be accompanied by nausea, cold sweats, dizziness and shakiness. Light, noise and movement generally compound the pain.
A major cause of tension headaches is when the two cervical vertebrae at the top of the neck are not aligned and this causes a small muscle to spasm which, in turn, pulls on a tendon connected to the Dura mater (the brain covering). Neck muscles damaged in a whiplash injury are also main contributors to headaches.
Migraine headaches happen when the blood vessels to the brain constrict and then dilate. During each dilation of the blood vessels, blood pressure increases inside the brain, leading to the throbbing pain described by sufferers.
The good news is that chiropractic treatments can cure – or at least alleviate to a great degree – headaches. In particular, spinal decompression therapy is the best route to follow. This treatment focuses on the vertebrae at the base of the neck. It is performed while the patient is fully clothed and lying on a bed with sensors attached to various parts of the body. In essence, a computer is able to identify which of the discs which form a cushion between the vertebrae is causing the problem and these vertebrae are then maneuvered and manipulated to allow the discs to rehydrate and retain their function, thus separating the vertebrae, which are often the cause of the pain. This procedure should be followed for approximately four weeks, to ensure that the vertebrae are properly realigned and the discs fully hydrated.
